Salmon Farm Tour in the Valley of Springs
Salmon HaMaayanot
Sde Eliyahu is home to a pioneering land-based salmon farm – the first of its kind in Israel. In an innovative closed system, fresh salmon is raised for the local market as a high-quality, fresh and healthy alternative to imported salmon.
On the Salmon HaMaayanot tour you will:
- Discover innovative technology for raising fish in a closed system
- Hear about the biological and economic challenges of the project, and the future of aquaculture in Israel
- Combine the visit with Bio-Tour's organic farming and biological pest control tour, and finish with a group meal – by prior arrangement
About the project
The technology chosen by InValley Technologies makes it possible, for the first time, to raise salmon in Israel. Salmon farms using this technology have been built around the world in every type of climate – from the Swiss Alps, through the deserts of Dubai, to the plains of Florida.
The Sde Eliyahu facility is planned to market about 40 tons of salmon a year. Its main goals: to test the economics and quality of local production, to test closed-system technologies, and to gain experience towards building commercial systems.
The facility was designed with the support of the American company INNOVESA, which specializes in building facilities of this kind, in partnership with Prof. Yonathan Zohar – one of the founders of the National Center for Mariculture in Eilat and head of the Aquaculture Research Center at the University of Maryland.
Project partners include KKL-JNF, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Shean Group, Tzemach Ta'arovot, the Israeli Fish Breeders Association and Sde Eliyahu.
The tour is suitable for adult groups, seniors, schools and professionals, and takes place by prior arrangement. It can be combined with our professional tours or the organic farming tour, and a group meal.
